Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted buy The Broke and The Bookish. Each week they post a new topic and invite everyone to share their lists.
– I love reading because….it makes me smarter. I have been a reader since a very young age, starting at around the age of 4. I always loved it and was encouraged to read rather than watch cartoons on TV. I always learn such a lot from books -whether it be new vocabulary, writing, spelling or inference skills. I also believe that reading gave me a passion for learning, both in school and during further education – it opens up so many doors. I try and impose this same belief on my students.
– I love reading because….I can visit different places. I love this about reading. I can pick up a book and travel across the world, into dystopian futures and back into the past. I can learn about different cultures and traditions – all from the comfort of my sofa.
– I love reading because….it helps me to relax. Reading helps me to kick back and unwind. I don’t feel any pressure when I read because I enjoy it so much. There is nothing I like more than coming home after a long day at work and snuggling up on the sofa with my latest read. It also stops me from being a workaholic. If I didn’t have the enjoyment of reading I would plan lessons and mark all evening (as TV doesn’t interest me a great deal and my husband works shifts).
– I love reading because….of the choices and possibilities. I can choose a book based on how I feel. If I want to read some light and easy chick lit I can or a more dark and sinister thriller novel, I can. There are so many options that I am never lost for what to read next.
– I love reading because….I never get bored of it. I suppose this expands on number four. I love that there is so much choice available. I can discover new authors, new genres and old classics easily. I never get bored of reading because of the vast amount of literature out there.
– I love reading because….I have learnt to empathise. Through reading I have learnt to step into the shoes of other people. I have learnt about emotions and feelings, different situations and events that I might never come across in my lifetime or that are very current in our society today. A recent example of this would be ‘Looking at the Stars’ – a novel about war, pain and suffering depicting life in a country similar to Syria or Afghanistan. I was able to put myself into their shoes and understand their world a little better.
– I love reading because….of book shopping! Discovering and purchasing new books is one of my favourite things to do. I love browsing bookshops and my local library. I love admiring pretty covers and book designs. I love the satisfaction of buying a new book to add to my (growing) collection. I do not enjoy shopping for clothes (being petite means I struggle to find clothes that fit and absolutely hate the rigmarole of fitting rooms!) so book shopping is definitely preferable!
– I love reading because….conversations with other book lovers. I really enjoy being able to talk to others about a book have enjoyed. I also love the book blogging community, being able to make new friends and talk to people that share a common interest is wonderful.
– I love reading because….I never have to rely on technology to use it. Reading is about one of the only things nowadays that I don’t have to worry about charging, breaking or receiving no signal (apart from if you use an e-reader of course). I know that I can be anywhere and still have my trusty paperback by my side – in case of emergencies.
– I love reading because….I can decorate my house with them. Books are wonderful decorating tools. I intend to have space in the lounge (when we redecorate – or move) where all of my gorgeous books are on display for everyone to see. Magic!
